Video: Madhya Pradesh businessman raided, 8 crores found in water tanker

A video shows tax officials drying up cash.

Madhya Pradesh-based businessman Shankar Rai and his family were raided in the state’s Damoh district on Thursday and unaccounted cash worth over Rs 8 crore was recovered, the Income Tax Department said.

The cash was found in a bag which was hidden in an underground water tank. A video shows tax officials drying up cash. Besides cash, jewelery worth Rs 5 crore was also seized.

Joint commissioner Munmun Sharma said, “The Income Tax Department has seized Rs 8 crore cash from the Rai family, including a bag filled with Rs 1 crore cash in a water container. Apart from this, three kilograms of gold has also been seized.” ” Income Tax Department, Jabalpur, who led the tax raids.

While Mr. Rai has served as the President of Damoh Municipality with the support of the Congress, his brother Kamal Rai was earlier the Vice-Chairman of Damoh Municipality with the support of the BJP.

The raids, which started at 5 am on Thursday, lasted for 39 hours. Tax officials raided more than ten premises owned by the family of Shankar Rai.

The tax department revealed that Mr. Rai’s family was running about three dozen buses in the name of employees.

The department has announced a reward of Rs 10,000 for anyone giving more information about the Rai family’s property in Madhya Pradesh or any other place.

After the operation was over, the Joint Commissioner said, “The physical raid has been done and the investigation will continue on the basis of the documents seized from the Rai family, which will be done in Bhopal.”

“The department will now examine the seized documents and unnamed properties. Hence, we will have to wait for the final figure,” the joint commissioner said.

In January 2019, former Samajwadi Party MP from Chandauli seat in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Jawahar Jaiswal (with Rs 25,000 on his head in a murder case) was arrested by the UP STF from the premises of Sanjay Rai (Shankar Rai’s brother).
