Video: “Songs in Persian” – Coldplay sings to support Iran protesters

Coldplay performs “Baraye” at a concert in Buenos Aires.

British rock band Coldplay was joined on stage in Buenos Aires by Iranian actor Golshifteh Farahani to sing the anthem of Iranian youth in protest against the killings of youth in a widely documented crackdown on demonstrations following the death of Mahsa Amini.

Iran has been hit by six weeks of protests over the death of 22-year-old Amini in custody after she was arrested for allegedly violating strict dress rules for women.

The song he sang was “Baraye” in Persian by Iranian pop singer Sherwin Hajipour, which has become the anthem of Iranian youth.

“The song is in Persian so I can’t really sing it. But we’ll sing it together and we send it lovingly from Buenos Aires,” singer Chris Martin said minutes before the performance.

The concert was shown worldwide on Voice of America (VOA).

“@coldplay surprised by singing #shervin_hajipour #baraye, a song that went viral during the recent protests in Iran.
@coldplay was performing live in Buenos Aires. Watching it live in a Chicago theater brought tears to my eyes. @Golshifteh sing!
You guys are class! Thank you!” tweeted Moh Hosseinien, a research fellow at the Kellogg School.

Another Twitter user said, “Coldplay brought out Golshifteh during their concert and sang Barye By Sherwin Hajipur. It really brought tears to my eyes. Name of Ellie.
