Thiruvananthapuram:

Heavy rains lashed many parts of Kerala today and five districts were put on red alert and seven districts on orange alert. A footage showing a bus stuck in a waterlogged street – with passengers struggling to come out – turned out to be one of the most defining videos of the horrors of rain in the southern state.

On the request of the state government, the army and the air force have stepped in. Helicopters are on standby and all bases under Southern Air Command are on high alert. The army has deployed its troops in the flood-affected areas. An army contingent consisting of around 30 personnel has been shifted from Pangode military station to Kanjirapally in Kottayam district.

Visuals from rural Kottayam, one of the five districts where “heavy to extremely heavy” rain warnings were issued, show locals pushing a car while they could barely walk in knee-deep water Were.

In another clip, some people are seen standing in a line, apparently trying to pull out a vehicle with a rope amid heavy rain.

Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur are the districts that have been put on red alert. In seven districts of the state – Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad – the weather office has issued an “orange alert”, indicating “heavy to very heavy rain”. Two districts have been put on yellow alert.

The Chief Minister’s Office has sent a warning letter, urging people to be extremely careful and avoid traveling near mountains or rivers.

“Under the influence of a Low Pressure Area over Southeast Arabian Sea off Kerala coast, isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur over the state till the morning of 17 October (Sunday). 18 (Monday) and 19 morning (Tuesday) There has been a further reduction in rain since then.”

Cautioning the fishermen, it further said: “Gust wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph gusting to 60 kmph is very likely along Kerala coast. Fishermen are advised to avoid these sea areas today and tomorrow.” Don’t go in”.
