vietnamese that never worked

Saigon, May 1: Vietnameseization not only never worked, but never happened, despite the American pull-out. It is an imprint of newsman Peter Arnett and Associated Press photographer Horst Fass, who covered the Vietnam War from 1962 to 1970 and returned three weeks earlier to report on the current Viet-Congress offensive. He writes: What we have seen in the past three weeks feels like a rewinding of a film bar of the past 10 years. Years left behind as images of wartime Vietnam flashed before our eyes. One morning last week, a US consultant for rural development put up a 1.8m computer readout of his province’s security rating he had just received from Saigon. “Look at this”, he said, pointing to a bank of numbers. “This is going to give the current status of our popular force units. We cannot reach any of these units by radio. They have just gone. This paper sucks.” He went on to chart detailing development plans for several settlements in his northern districts. “We’ve lost them too”, he said, turning the chart to the wall. In three major war zones. We went somewhere else – the feeling of a sharp, unexpected turnaround was strong. We arrived 10 days after the start of the North Vietnamese offensive. Deep penetration had been made in Quan Tri province.
