Success did not come easy for 20-year-old Mallala Anusha, who comes from an economically weak background. But when it did, it took the athletic world by storm.

Anusha, a first-year BA student of Siddhartha Mahila Kalashala in Vijayawada, has participated in around 20 competitions in the triple jump category at the state and national level since taking up sports full-time in 2017.

“But I tasted success for the first time when I won gold in the triple jump category at the Inter-State University Athletics Championships for men and women in Chennai in March,” says Anusha, who represents Krishna University in competitions. ,

Anusha is one of the two athletes from the country who have been selected in the triple jump category for the World University Games 2023 to be held in China. The schedule is yet to be announced. The second girl to be selected in this category is from Maharashtra.

A total of 68 athletes have been selected from across the country in various categories for this event.

Anusha hails from a small village in Prakasam district. His father was a tenant farmer, so finding the money to spend on competitions and coaching was never easy. “Before requesting payment for any competition, I will promise them that I will come back with a medal,” says Anusha, who is now coaching for free at the Pullela Gopichand Badminton Academy in Hyderabad.

While thanking her college management for funding her trip to China, however, she expressed her dismay at Krishna University’s management as she was allegedly told that they did not have enough funds to help her financially.
