Villarreal humiliate Juventus to reach Champions League quarter

Villarreal reached the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Wednesday after beating Juventus 3-0 in Turin 4-1 on aggregate.

Penalties from Gerard Moreno and tap-ins from Arnaut Denjuma and Pau Torres in the final quarter of an hour were enough for Unai Emery’s well-organized side to see the Italians at Allianz Stadium and a place in Friday’s last-eight draw.

Villarreal stunned Juve with three sucker punches, spending much of the match on the backfoot, content to block the hosts’ attacks, which became less powerful as the match progressed.

Juve’s embarrassing defeat was just the second since late November and it punctuated a strong form that put them back in the race for the league title at home.

The home crowd saw his team bounce off a yellow wall before shrinking from a promising start and crashing out of the competition.

Italy are now without a single representative in this season’s Champions League as it moves into its later stages.
