Details of the investigation shared by the agency suggest that the violence in the village was a retaliation in response to the killing of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Bhadu Sheikh.

A press statement shared by the agency said: “On 21.03.2022 at around 20.30, Bhadu Sk was murdered at Bogatui Mor on NH-60 by throwing country bombs and using illegal firearms. Thereafter, the associates and followers of the slain Bhadu Sk, instigated by one of the accused, attacked the houses of their rival groups located in Bogtui village with lethal weapons, with the intention of killing their rivals/opponents, to further the conspiracy. In the said houses, kerosene/petrol etc. were poured on the houses, which resulted in the said offence.

The agency said it was found that there was a “long-standing rivalry in the village between the two groups”, one led by the late Bhadu Sk, while the other group was led by a member of the victims’ families and others. did.

The Calcutta High Court had on March 25 directed the CBI to probe the violence. According to the CBI, the bodies recovered were complete and unrecognizable, and the agency had to take the help of DNA profiling. “Biological samples of these victims preserved during the post-mortem examination as well as blood samples of possible direct relatives of the victims were sent for DNA profiling. With the help of DNA profiling, the identities of all the seven victims were established,” the CBI said, adding that later, more victims succumbed to their deaths, taking the death toll to 10.

According to the CBI, during the initial phase of the investigation, the village was almost deserted and no witnesses were coming forward due to fear. Many Witnesses had taken refuge in other villages. “After sustained efforts, several witnesses came forward and their statements were recorded,” the CBI said. The state police had arrested 21 suspects in this crime. The CBI has arrested six accused during the investigation, out of which four are from Mumbai.

The agency also filed a charge sheet against four accused in Bhadu Sheikh’s murder. The Calcutta High Court had directed the CBI to investigate the murder as well. According to the agency, the murder was also the result of a long-standing rivalry. “During investigation it was found that there was a long standing rivalry between the two groups in the area. One faction was led by the deceased Mr. Bhadu Sk and the other was led by the FIR accused. Bhadu Sk was killed in furtherance of the said rivalry,” a statement from the agency said.
