The extraordinary events in Sri Lanka are the culmination of months of mainly peaceful protests in the nation. The country is battling a severe shortage of foreign exchange which has resulted in the worst financial crisis in nearly seven decades. Sri Lanka has been battling a prolonged blackout as well as severe food and fuel shortages.
