Viral Video: Baker Shares How ‘Unhygienic’ Cakes Are Made In Commercial Bakery

Many people prefer buying cakes from stores as they are usually cheaper than those by home bakers. Recently, a baker Harsha Balwani shared a video on her Instagram handle (@sweetwonders_nasik) showing how a big batch of marble cake is made in a commercial Indian bakery. In the viral video that has more than 16 million views, the baker questions how safe and hygienic are these commercial cakes that are sold at cheap prices. The video pulls back the curtain on the cake-making industry, showcasing the slightly chaotic assembly lines in commercial bakeries.

In this eye-opening video tour of a commercial bakery, we get a backstage pass to the not-so-sweet secrets of mass-produced cakes. The scene unfolds with a worker casually tossing eggs into a bucket, shells and all, then dumping the questionable mix into a machine. Forget cocoa powder, it turns out, they are using “food colouring and essence” to masquerade as chocolate flavour. The mixing machine continues, but here comes the “best part” – a worker elbow-deep in flour, manually mixing the dough.

The voiceover, dripping with sarcasm, questions the absence of a simple machine for this task, while the worker wrings batter-soaked hands in a questionable display of hygiene. Cake tins are filled, and the baker who shared the video raises an eyebrow at the unclean floor and the lack of a meticulous process. A tray full of cake tins slides into a factory oven, and out comes piping hot cakes. The baker concludes the video by saying that this stark difference in processes and hygiene is the reason for the big price difference between the cakes prepared by home bakers and those produced commercially. “Why the difference? Here is the answer!” the caption read.

In the comments section, many users were not quite affected by the unhygienic cake-making process. One user wrote, “Ma’am these products aren’t gonna sell at any supermarket shelves. These are for the poor people who live below the poverty line. For them, it’s the comfort and affordable food. So please don’t be so dramatic.” Another user commented, “When it is baked above 100C in the oven most bacteria are killed.”

Someone else stated, “Start working in bulk, you will also keep 100-150 people under you who are doing all this. Every big brand makes things like this in the starting.” A user joked, “Indians’ immunity is strong because of this.”
