Viral video calling of Twitter’s Left bias is ‘deeply disturbing’: MoS Chandrashekhar

Minister of State for Electronics and IT Rajiv Chandrashekhar responded to a viral video in which an outspoken Twitter engineer said that the platform had a strong leftist bias and right wingers were often suppressed.

According to the minister, this is “seriously disturbing” and calls into question the existence of an open and responsible internet.

chandrashekhar argued that internet intermediaries and platforms enjoy safe harbor under Section 79 of the IT Act in India as their algorithms are also expected to be neutral.

He tweeted on May 17 that “disclosures like these raise many concerns for us in terms of an open, secure and trustworthy, accountable Internet”.

In the video shared by Project Veritas, the person in question was identified as Twitter engineer Siru Murugesan. He claimed that Twitter has a left-wing mindset that does not believe in free speech and would restrict conservative or right-wing views.

It should be noted here that Project Veritas earned huge popularity on social media during and after the 2020 US presidential election. As previously reported, in April 2021, the founder of Project Veritas was fired from Twitter for using multiple fake accounts to “artificially amplify or disrupt conversations” in violation of the platform’s anti-manipulation and spam policies. was banned.

However, it is understood that Murugesan had no idea about the video clip. He can be heard saying, “Ideologically, it makes no sense, because we are actually censoring the right, not the left.”

“So, everyone on the right wing would be like, ‘Brother, it’s okay to stay, just have to bear it.’ ‘The left will be like this, no, I’m not going to tolerate it. I need to censor it or else I’m not going to come on stage. , “They said.

Murugesan said his colleagues “hate” the planned acquisition of billionaire Elon Musk because he is seen as someone whose business runs contrary to the “socialist” environment of Twitter.

He called Musk “a capitalist” and said that “we weren’t really operating as a capitalist, more like a socialist”. Murugesan also said that a lot has changed since the acquisition was announced and Twitter employees are worried about their jobs.

However, Chandrasekhar’s latest tweet came almost a week after he said de-platforming was a violation of users’ fundamental rights, in reference to Twitter’s decision to remove former US President Donald Trump from the microblogging platform.

It is noteworthy that when the video of the alleged Twitter engineer went viral, Musk had tweeted on May 17 asking if it was legitimate? He made the comment on a Twitter thread where journalist Benny Johnson posted the video.

Johnson responded to Musk by saying that Twitter had confirmed the video’s authenticity, posting a photo of an alleged internal Twitter message warning employees about being targeted by journalists.

Musk has often complained about left-wing bias TwitterPointing out that right-wing figures like Trump and former White House chief strategist Steve Bannon are banned while extremists on the other hand are not.

However, amidst this chaos on the microblogging site, Twitter has not issued any official statement on its part or reacted to the veracity of the video.
