Bowerbird imitating the sound of children playing

The call, song and relentless chirp of a bird are soothing to the ears. Birds use their unique calls to communicate and sometimes to attract each other. But, did you know that some species of birds are also the best mimics in the world? These birds can imitate not only other birds but also humans. A new viral video posted to Twitter by Buitengbiden shows the bowerbird and its imitation skills, and you’ll certainly be impressed.

The 56-second video shows how a bowerbird can imitate different species or sounds that it has heard elsewhere. The male bowerbird collects sounds and uses these sounds to woo the female bird. The range of bowerbird mimicry is impressive, from woodcutting, dog barking, children playing or their frustrated parents.

The video was posted with the caption, “Bowerbird imitating the sound of children playing.” The video, posted a few hours ago, has also garnered 1.7 million views, 3,162 likes and 538 retweets. Social media users are in awe of the bird’s mimicry skills. One user wrote, OK, this is a little scary. Cool, but creepy!” Another user wrote, “What a cool and beautiful talent. Nature never ceases to amaze.” “It blows my mind,” commented a third.

According to a report by Labrotes, these birds can create magic by trying to imitate all the sounds around them. They are best known for copying other bird calls, and they are so good at doing so that sometimes even non-ideal birds in their normal surroundings find themselves confused or foolish.

In addition to imitating the calls of other birds, the bowerbird may be particularly adept at imitating artificial noises.
