Visakhapatnam: R&B Minister asks officials to repair Yelleru Left Main Canal

Roads and Buildings Minister D. Raja has asked the officials concerned to repair the Yelleru Left Main Canal (YLMC) to ensure adequate supply of drinking water to the city and industrial water to the stakeholder companies.

The minister held a meeting with irrigation officials and GVMC engineers on Wednesday evening, in which Mayor G. Hari Venkat Kumar, District Collector A. Mallikarjuna and GVMC commissioner G. Lakshmisha also participated.

He discussed in detail the issues related to the repair of YLMC, which runs for about 150 kms from East Godavari to Visakhapatnam district. Water wastage due to poor maintenance. The canal runs for about 68 km in East Godavari and repair work can be started from there, he said and discussed alternative measures to be taken during the repair of YLMC.

The Collector said that Visakhapatnam district needs 90 MGD of water daily. Out of this 44 MGD was being met by YLMC. The drinking water needs of the district can be temporarily met by drawing 8 MGD of water from Kanithi Balancing Reservoir (KBR) at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant (VSP) and 30 MGD from Meghadrigedda Reservoir.

The meeting was attended by Government Whip Karanam Dharmasree, Narsipatnam MLA Petla Uma Shankar Ganesh and officials of various departments.
