Volunteers create awareness on ‘Save Soil’ movement in Coimbatore

Hundreds of volunteers on Friday created awareness among the public on the ‘Save Soil’ movement at the city’s Gandhipuram bus stand.

The movement, started by Jaggi Vasudev, the founder of Isha Foundation, aimed to prevent further soil erosion.

“Soil resources are depleting rapidly, not only in Tamil Nadu but globally. The United Nations states that soils should contain at least 3% organic matter. However, Tamil Nadu soil has only 0.5% organic matter. This not only affects agriculture but also reduces the nutrients in the food we eat and affects the health of the people,” the volunteers said.

Mr. Vasudev has embarked on a 100-day motorcycle tour across Europe, Central Asia and Africa to urge countries around the world to create policies to save soil. His journey will end in June this year in the Cauvery river basin.
