“Voters don’t run after money”: Manipur’s youngest candidate who doesn’t own property

26-year-old Ningthoujam Popilal Singh is the youngest candidate in Manipur elections.

Ningthoujam Popilal Singh, 26, on a door-to-door campaign, is the youngest candidate to contest the Manipur Assembly elections in Sekmai constituency – the only Scheduled Caste reserved seat in Manipur.

Mr Singh, fighting on a Nationalist Congress Party, or NCP, ticket after being denied a Congress ticket, has zero assets, according to an affidavit submitted to the Election Commission. It is strange in Manipur where out of 173 candidates in the first phase, 91 were crorepatis.

In Manipur, where it is a pre-requisite for getting rich to get a ticket, Mr. Singh is an exception.

They have a tough competition in Sekamai, a place famous for local alcoholic beverages. Besides Mr Singh, seven other candidates are in the fray.

“I am an unemployed graduate. I survive for my family through private tuition to the students of my village. Voters of my constituency do not run after money. You cannot win them over with money,” Mr. Singh told NDTV. told.

He said the local community was sponsoring his campaign.

“He is a youth who works for the community. His agenda for the future generation, what he does influences me a lot, so I support him,” Mr. Singh says, whether he wins or loses. Formally one is the motivation of youth to enter politics

The ruling BJP in Manipur, led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh, is trying to win another term.

The removal of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, or AFSPA, is a big issue for all political parties, including the Congress, in Manipur.
