Voting continues for Rampur, Azamgarh Lok Sabha by-elections, first litmus test for Yogi 2.0, SP retains both seats

Voting is underway for Rampur and Azamgarh Lok Sabha bypolls in Uttar Pradesh, which is seen as the first major challenge for the Yogi 2.0 government, while the Samajwadi Party would like to retain both the seats.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the seats of Azamgarh and Rampur were won by the Samajwadi Party, after the seats fell vacant. Aajam Khan And Akhilesh Yadav He resigned as he decided to continue as MLA.

SP leader and MLA Azam Khan on Thursday accused the Rampur police and administration of violence on the eve of polling. “I kept awake the whole night. Our Lok Sabha candidate Ganj Thana, Kotwali Thana, Civil Lines P.S. [in Rampur], The most indecent behavior was that of the Inspector of Ganj police station. He resorted to violence. If the polling percentage falls then the blame is on the administration,” said Azam Khan while talking to the news agency ANI,

Azam Khan said that “jeeps and sirens were everywhere in the city”, adding that the police took people to the police station, thrashed them and added that they also came to know about “some money transfers”.

“It is shameful. I am a criminal, I admit. So my city has been treated as such. They can do whatever they want, we have to endure. If I have to live, I have to endure,” said Azam Khan Told.

Earlier on Tuesday, UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath hit out at the Samajwadi Party, saying that the BJP’s double engine government, unlike the previous government, has worked to free the poor from the land mafia. In a veiled attack on SP MLA Azam Khan in his stronghold Rampur, the CM said,Their rope got burnt but Anthony didn’t. [They lost all their powers but still their attitude didn’t come down], BJP will not allow Rampur to become a den of terrorism again.

The CM made this remark while addressing public meetings in Bilaspur and Milak areas before the by-elections in support of BJP candidate Ghanshyam Singh Lodhi. “Earlier, the land mafia used to encroach on the land of the poor and often oppress them. After coming to power, our government gave back the land to the poor and took action against such mafia and also took action against them.

BJP has fielded Ghanshyam Lodhi for Rampur Lok Sabha by-election, former MLC of Samajwadi Party Lodhi, who joined BJP before 2022 Uttar Pradesh assembly election, is now contesting against Asim Raza of Samajwadi Party Who were selected by Azam Khan for this competition. , Congress and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) have not fielded any candidate for Rampur by-election.

However, in Azamgarh, BSP candidate Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali has created problems for SP candidate Dharmendra Yadav. On the other hand, BJP has once again fielded Bhojpuri singer Dinesh Lal Yadav alias Nirahua from this seat, who got around 3.6 lakh votes in 2019 but lost to Akhilesh Yadav.

Also, the contest on Azamgarh seat has turned interesting as the Rashtriya Ulema Parishad, the political outfit of Maulvi Amir Rashdi Madani, has extended support to BSP candidate Shah Alam alias Guddu Jamali. After getting the support of RUC, Jamali has claimed that now his victory is certain.

The main reason behind this is said to be the dominance of Rashtriya Ulema Parishad in Sadar, Mubarakpur and Gopalpur assembly seats which are part of Azamgarh parliamentary constituency. In the 2017 UP assembly election, the BSP was successful in winning four seats with the support of the Rashtriya Ulama Parishad.

Counting of votes for both Azamgarh and Rampur seats will be held on June 26.
