Voting in Meghalaya, Nagaland Assembly Elections 2023 today

Assembly Elections 2023: Voting for 59 out of 60 seats in the Meghalaya and Nagaland assembly elections is to be held on Monday.

Over 21.6 lakh voters will decide the fate of 369 candidates in Meghalaya, while around 13 lakh voters will exercise their franchise in Nagaland.

In Nagaland, 183 candidates are contesting for 59 out of 60 seats. The counting of votes will take place on March 2.

In Meghalaya, the ruling National People’s Party will fight to retain power, while the BJP and the Trinamool Congress will attempt to overthrow the current government.

Polling will start at 7 am in both the states and will continue till 4 pm.

Meghalaya has 3,419 booths, of which 640 are classified as ‘vulnerable’ and 323 as ‘critical’.

In Meghalaya, out of 369 candidates, 36 are women. Congress has fielded the maximum number of women candidates. Voting has been postponed due to the death of a candidate in the Sohyeong constituency.

Over 19,000 polling personnel and 119 companies of CAPFs have been deployed at polling stations in Meghalaya.

In Nagaland, the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) is contesting the elections in alliance with the BJP on a 40:20 seat-sharing basis.

Nagaland’s Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) V Shashank Shekhar said, “All arrangements have been completed and we are confident that the elections will be conducted smoothly.”

In Nagaland, the electorate includes 6,47,523 male and 6,49,876 female voters, who are eligible to exercise their franchise at 2,291 polling stations.
