VP Dhankhar calls for sympathy and sensitivity towards Border Security Force

NEW DELHI: Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar issued a call on Wednesday to all state governments, particularly those of border states, urging them to demonstrate empathy and sensitivity towards the Border Security Force (BSF).

Dhankhar acknowledged the significant challenges faced by BSF personnel in safeguarding India’s extensive, intricate, and porous borders. He emphasized the importance of states taking proactive measures and raising awareness within their systems to uphold the high morale of the BSF.

The Vice President delivered the Rustamji Memorial Lecture – 2023 during the 20th Investiture Ceremony of the Border Security Force at Vigyan Bhawan in New Delhi. He encouraged residents of border areas to consider themselves an integral part of the BSF and extend their support to the force. Additionally, he called for the establishment of a mechanism to address the welfare of cattle seized by the BSF during operations against smugglers.

As part of the Investiture Ceremony, 35 BSF personnel were honoured, including two Police Medals for Gallantry and 33 Police Medals for Meritorious Service.

Commending the BSF soldiers for their dedication to duty, Vice President Dhankhar highlighted their sublime commitment and nationalism, urging others to emulate their example. “The brave men and women of the BSF exemplify courage, valour, and dedication in the service of the nation,” he stated.

Praising the unwavering spirit of BSF personnel, the Vice President acknowledged their relentless defence of India’s borders, even in challenging geographical conditions such as the Thar desert, Rann of Kutch, snow-clad mountains, and dense forests of the northeast. He also expressed gratitude to the families of BSF Jawans for their unwavering support and resilience despite the hardships they face.

Highlighting the significance of safe and secure borders, he emphasised that India’s unprecedented growth is closely tied to this crucial factor.

Reflecting on the legacy of K F Rustamji, VP Dhankhar described him as a charismatic leader who not only established the BSF but also laid the foundations of public interest litigation in the Indian judicial system. Under Rustamji’s guidance, the BSF transformed into a modern, disciplined, and capable force.
