Volkswagen’s Spanish arm SEAT added new output curbs at its main assembly car plant near Barcelona in December, the company said on Monday, closing its factory for five days due to global semiconductor supply constraints.
SEAT has decided to extend its production break by a week ahead of the Christmas holidays, which was originally planned to start after December 23, but will now take place after December 16.
“The global semiconductor supply crisis, which affects the entire automobile industry, will force us to deactivate the Martorell plant on December 17, 20, 21, 22 and 23,” the company said in a statement on Monday.
The statement said that demand for SEAT and CUPRA brands has returned to pre-pandemic levels, hence reducing production.
The company will also close next week on January 3, 4 and 7 as January 5 and 6 are holidays.
Before the start of the pandemic, the Martorell plant assembled about 500,000 cars in 2019.
SEAT has curtailed its production several times during 2021, including the partial deactivation of the plant at the end of August.
