Sonia Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra came together and cast their vote at the AICC headquarters.

As voting for the Congress president’s post begins, outgoing party president Sonia Gandhi on Monday said she was waiting for this day for a long time. Sonia Gandhi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra came together and cast their vote at the AICC headquarters.

When asked by journalists about the elections, Sonia Gandhi said, “I have been waiting for this day for a long time.” Later, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also cast his vote in the election at the party headquarters, where the 68th polling station for the AICC presidential election has been set up. Veteran Congress leader P Chidambaram cast his vote at the AICC headquarters here.

Several senior leaders like General Secretary Jairam Ramesh, Ambika Soni, Ajay Maken and Vivek Tankha cast their votes at the party headquarters.

Voting began on Monday for the post of Congress President, as senior leaders Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor are facing each other for the post of AICC chief. More than 9,000 Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) representatives form the electoral college to choose the party chief in a secret ballot.

Polling began at 10 am at the party’s polling stations here at the AICC headquarters and state offices across the country. Kharge is considered a favorite for his alleged closeness to the Gandhi family and the support of senior leaders, even as Tharoor has projected himself as a candidate for change.
