Walkways and cycling tracks will be developed

The Greater Chennai Corporation will promote non-motorized transport by creating awareness about walking and cycling.

The civic body has launched a campaign focusing on the development of walkways and cycling tracks, urging residents to emulate the winners of the national walking, cycling and running challenge.

Health Minister I. Subramaniam has ranked first among 297 leaders, including ministers, CEOs and commissioners, who participated from 75 cities in the national challenge of running, walking and cycling. Corporation commissioner Gagandeep Singh Bedi stood fifth in the walking challenge.

Chennaiites secured the first position in cycling by covering a distance of 72,458 km. 1,059 residents took part in the cycling challenge. The city’s residents also recorded 21,860 km in the walking category, in second place.

The corporation plans to develop more infrastructure for walking, cycling and running in different parts of the city. Officials said that residents are requested to identify places in each ward to promote these activities.
