War in Ukraine: ‘No food, no water’, Indian students seek government’s help in evacuation

An Indian student, a native of Karnataka, released a video on social media platforms asking for help from the Indian government, claiming to have heard the sound of bombs as he faced a shortage of food, water and other essential supplies. As the war between Ukraine and Russia escalates, Indians living in Ukraine are facing difficulties and want to return home. An estimated 20,000 Indian students were studying in Ukraine and more than half are still stranded there.

“I am Pravin Ajardi, I am in Kharkiv city of Ukraine. The war is going on. We are short of food and water. We are hearing the sound of bombs. Indian Embassy is not responding to us properly. There are about 100 students here from Karnataka. Students of India are struggling for food and water supply. Indian Embassy is not helping us,” an Indian student can be heard saying in Kannada in a video.

However, he is not the only one among many Indian students who have released videos on social media platforms and sought help from India. Even the Indian embassy issued a warning asking students and other Indian nationals to leave the country. The students claim that their return was delayed due to costly air tickets costing up to Rs 1 lakh for one-way tickets and the formalities of shifting classes in online mode. Currently, air traffic from Ukraine is stopped.

The Indian Embassy has written a letter to the Government of Ukraine asking them to ensure the safety of Indians living in their country. “India wrote a letter to the President of Ukraine, informing about 15,000 Indian students stranded in different regions of Ukraine. India asks to ensure their safety and security. They need to be provided with food and water,” the official statement said.

This has drawn criticism from the opposition who have asked the government to evacuate students and other Indian citizens. Bhagwant Mann of the Aam Aadmi Party said that “the Government of India has ordered him to leave but no arrangement has been made.” He said, “Modi government should bring back students from Ukraine safely and free of cost. Indians in Ukraine are paying the cost of air. Sales in India, private airlines have tripled the ticket price.”
