Along with the Russian attack on Ukraine, many stories of military action are being shared on social media. One of the stories highlighting the supreme sacrifice of a Ukrainian soldier comes from the Crimea-Russia crossroads. The geographic location was an important strategic point for Russian forces to enter Ukrainian territory. To prevent this from happening, a Ukrainian soldier blew himself up on a bridge to prevent Russian troops from advancing.
The news of this development was shared by the Ukrainian military on its official Facebook page. The brave soldier, identified as Skakun Vitaly Volodymyrovich, is said to have decided to blow up the Geniche Car Bridge, which was located at one of the prominent places on the map of Ukraine near the Crimean crossroads. According to the Ukrainian military, “in order to stop the propagation of the tank column, it was decided to overthrow the Janish Kar Bridge.”
To carry out the task, the Ukrainian army asked navigator Volodymyrovich, an engineer from a separate battalion. According to the Facebook post, “The bridge was replaced, but he did not have time to leave. According to the words of the brothers, Vitaly was out of touch. Immediately there was an explosion. Our brother was killed. His heroic acts significantly slowed the enemy’s push, allowing the unit to move and organize the defense.
The Facebook post also added that the Ukrainian Army’s Marine Corps Command will ask the high command to award Volodymyrovich a state award for his sacrifice.
The Facebook post also included a message from the Ukrainian military that read, “Russian invaders, know, the earth will burn under your feet! We will fight as long as we live! And we’ll keep fighting as long as we’re alive!”
In a later post, Page shared that Vitaly had been awarded the title ‘Hero of Ukraine’.
Although Russian troops have now entered Ukraine’s capital, Kiev, and street fighting has begun in the city, Volodymyrovich’s sacrifice is being praised on social media. One of the users commented, “Well done! My prayers go out to this courageous Ukrainian soldier who gave his life to save his country – Ukraine! May Allah bless you always! Tear down. God save Ukraine!”
