Wardwizard plans to set up Lithium-Ion Advanced Cell Manufacturing Unit in India

The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore-based Sunconnect for R&D and identification of potential partners.

WardWizard Innovation and Mobility Limited, which makes electric two-wheelers under the brand Joy e-bike, has announced plans to set up a lithium-ion advanced cell manufacturing unit at its electric vehicle subsidiary cluster in Vadodara, Gujarat. The company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Singapore-based renewable energy management consulting firm Sunconnect. The association aims to facilitate a feasibility study and identification of potential partner for manufacturing Li-ion advance cells in India. Under the MoU, Sunconnect will set up a committee of experienced scientists, engineers and analysts to evaluate and identify a professional partner, as well as develop a roadmap for setting up a 1GWh cell production plant at Wardwizard’s electric vehicle subsidiary cluster in Vadodara.

Commenting on the MoU with Sunconnect, Yatin Gupte, Chairman and Managing Director, Wardwizard Innovation & Mobility Ltd., said, “We are excited to be working with Sunconnect, one of the leading global renewable energy management consulting firms. The expertise will help us identify the right partner and establish a roadmap for setting up a Li-Ion Advance Cell manufacturing facility in our EV accessory cluster in between 15-18 months. Since the safety of our customers is of paramount importance to us, we We are integrating cutting edge technologies to enhance quality and promote the adoption of green mobility across the country.”

Elaborating further, Dr. Avishek Kumar, Founder, Sunconnect said, “We are grateful to WardWizard for giving us the opportunity to be a part of this EV transition and support the brand in developing battery infrastructure in India. Electric vehicles are the future. , and their success depends on high grade materials and advanced battery management system. Under the MoU, we will work with WardWizard to identify a partner equipped with the latest technology and high standards to manufacture Li-ion advanced cells. Our team will evolve and develop a viable plan and benchmarks for manufacturing quality batteries for Joy e-bike products.”

Sunkonnect will also identify leading testing and certification agencies to establish a Center of Excellence for Battery Testing on the WardWizard campus that will draft a standard quality specification for batteries. It will also draft standard norms for batteries to ensure quality and reliability for the range of models of Joy e-bikes.

In FY2022, the company expanded its annual production capacity from one lakh units to two lakh units in a single shift with a new automated assembly line at its factory. The company has acquired 4 million square feet of land to develop India’s first Electric Vehicle Ancillary Cluster in Vadodara to boost production of essential raw materials locally.
