A king cobra rescued from a well in Odisha’s Mayurbhanj

The Forest Department in Odisha has rescued a 12-foot king cobra that was found inside an abandoned well. Footage shared by news agency ANI shows the venomous snake swimming in a well and releasing it back into the wild.

King Cobra was found in Khunta area of ​​Mayurbhanj district on Tuesday. An image shared widely on social media shows the snake face-to-face with its rescuer.

“Forest department rescued 12 feet king cobra from an empty well in Khunta area of ​​Mayurbhanj district yesterday,” read the caption from ANI.

While some praised the forest department for saving the snake, other Twitter users commented on the size of the cobra.

“Fantastic creature,” wrote one Twitter user.

“Well done. The species is almost near extinction, it is important that we save their habitats and not kill them,” said another.

In a video from the rescue operation, a snake catcher is seen holding a king cobra, as crowds of curious onlookers watch. Some were seen recording the scene on their mobile phones.

According to a forest official involved in the rescue, the king cobra was checked for health before releasing it back into the forest.

The king cobra is the longest venomous snake in the world which can grow up to 19 feet. Although it tends to avoid confrontation with humans, the king cobra can be extremely dangerous when provoked.
