Mumbai has got a new viewing deck at Dadar, which will allow visitors to have an uninterrupted view of the majestic Arabian Sea from the shore. The strategically located viewing deck overlooks the iconic Bandra-Worli Sea Link. Shiv Sena leader and Maharashtra Environment Minister Aaditya Thackeray inaugurated the deck, which was once storm water, on February 9. He shared several pictures of it on Instagram, some of which depict the beauty of the deck at night.

Mr Thackeray said that the facility has been proposed to be named after Ramabai Ambedkar, wife of Dr BR Ambedkar.

“Inaugurated this deck in Dadar. It was a stormwater outflow, which has now been converted into a beautiful viewing deck by BMC as we focus on enhancing urban open spaces for citizens. Situated near Chaityabhoomi, we have proposed to name it ‘Mata Ramabai Ambedkar Memorial Viewing Deck’,” wrote Mr. Thackeray.

At the time of writing, the post had garnered over 24,000 likes. While one user said it looked like the exterior of a 5-star hotel, another suggested that the government build a similar facility on the city’s Cuffe Parade seafront. Other comments ranged from “impeccable work”, “amazing” and “astonishing”.

Mr Thackeray also shared the same set of images on Twitter, where people were coming forward with their comments.

Congratulating the government for the “good work” done on the viewing deck, a user said there were problems like traffic jams in the city that needed to be addressed. The user said traveling on the streets of Mumbai and “reaching our workplace is like winning a battle”.

Another user said it was “beautiful” and hoped the decks would have CCTV cameras so that anyone spitting or throwing garbage could be fined on the spot.

The civic body in Mumbai – the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) – also shared a video of the viewing deck on its Twitter handle. It said the storm water outflow was repurposed into a viewing deck as part of a strategic urbanization plan in the metropolis. It said the deck would provide a “beautiful experience” to both tourists and city residents.

A user commented on the post that BMC should make the rest of the city as beautiful as this.

Another called the deck “awful.”
