Watch: Autos racing backwards in Maharashtra in a new twist

A crowd gathered to watch the reverse auto race.

A reverse auto rickshaw driving competition was organized in Sangli district of Maharashtra on Tuesday. The event was organized at Haripur village on the occasion of Sangameshwar Yatra, reported news agency ANI.

In a video tweeted by ANI, auto-rickshaw drivers are seen running in the opposite direction at significant speed while looking back over their shoulders. Crowds of people turned up to watch the race and cheer the participants. A person can also be heard describing the race via live commentary.

As of writing this, the video has garnered over 80,000 views on the platform.

“This is great!! More power to the community. Just needs more protection for people watching,” wrote one user.

One person thought, “Auto There is also a main reverse gear, (Do auto rickshaws have reverse gear?) Never seen it used.

Another user joked, “Must add for the next Olympics”.

A user proposed a name for the contest – “Rickshaw Returns”.

“India is full of talent,” read one comment.

One person said, “Formula 1 auto looks thrilling”.

“We are still living in the 1960s,” read one comment.

Some described the event as “awesome”.

“How stupid are people standing on the side of such an uneven racing track watching a tricycle flip at full speed?” A user wrote.

According to former Shiv Sena MP from Shirur, Shivajirao Adhalrao Patil, who organized the run, car owners from Pune and neighboring Ahmedabad district participated in the event.

The kart owners raced individually over a 400-meter track and the winners were decided by the times clocked by each kart.
