A boy stole the show of Pope Francis’ Vatican audience on Wednesday, receiving a seat and a white papal hat as a reward for perseverance after walking the stage. The boy, whom Francis later said was his medical “limitation”, was wearing a mask and a tracksuit and appeared to be about 10 years old. He went to the Pope at the beginning of the audience at the elder Paul VI. Hall. He gave no alarm to the security officers, who did not try to stop him. He shook the Pope’s hand, jumped up and down in front of him. When it became clear that he wanted to stay for a while, Monsignor Leonardo Sapienza, the head of protocol, got up and gave the boy a chair to the right of the pope.

The boy, who once applauded enthusiastically while seated next to the Pope, moved freely on and off the stage, returning to the center several times as the audience continued to read the Pope’s address.

The boy pointed several times to the Pope’s white skull cap, known as Zuketo. The officers took the sign and were given a similar cap, to applause and laughter from a crowd of several thousand.

“I thank this boy for the lesson he has given to all of us. May the Lord help him in his limits as he grows, because what he did came from the heart,” Pope said.
