WATCH: Chester Zoo Captures Rare Baby Giraffe’s First Staggering Steps After Birth

Under the care of his mother Orla, a newborn giraffe, Stanley took his first staggering steps within an hour of being born at the Chester Zoo in England. The new member of the zoo has been named after Mount Stanley, the highest mountain in Uganda, where many zoo conservationists are leaving no stone unturned to increase the number of giraffes in the wild. The birth took place inside the zoo’s giraffe habitat at 2.57 a.m. on August 6, however, by August 11 the zoo’s keepers had shared the news via social media.

The giraffe’s team manager at the zoo, Sarah Roff, told Cheshire Live in a statement: “The mum-to-be Orla stood next to Dagmar, another veteran mother of the delivery, as she readied herself for the final push After that his calf came into the world with much percussion, causing the rest of the herd to jump to their feet.

The birth of rare newborn Stanley, who is already six feet tall, was captured in the zoo’s CCTV footage. In addition, the cameras also recorded the giraffe’s first few steps, which saw him walk towards his mother, Orla. The age of the mother giraffe is said to be 14. She was pregnant for the past 15 months and had to go through labor for more than three hours to bring her son into the world. Chester Zoo also took to social media to share the news of baby Stanley’s birth.
