Watch: English speaking grandmother from Kashmir takes internet by storm

An elderly woman from Kashmir was filmed learning English.

A 36-second video of an elderly Kashmiri woman flaunting her newly acquired English skills has taken the internet by storm.

The video, which was originally uploaded on Twitter by Syed Sleet Shah, has also found its way to other platforms like WhatsApp and Facebook.

The young man names some fruits, vegetables and animals in Kashmiri language and asks a woman in traditional attire and an easy-going 80s-looking woman to identify them in English.

Though she stumbles at first identifying ‘cat’, she makes up for it by calling the animal a ‘kyat’, and her drab Kashmiri accent has won over people.

She uniquely identifies onion, apple, garlic and dog and the video has become a hit on social media.

Though the location of the woman is not known, the tone of the person who recorded the video suggests that she hails from a rural district in the Valley. Several Twitter users commented on the post.

“Kashmiris’ fluency in English – even of people in their 80s is always impressive – is (is) it because the languages have root roots?” One of the users wrote.
