No help even after cars and people passed through the flooded roads

The coastal town of Thoothukudi in southern Tamil Nadu was flooded after receiving 26 cm of rain in eight hours. The district has received 60 per cent more rainfall this season – 51 cm as against the normal 32 cm. Water has also entered houses in Krishnarajapuram area of ​​the city.

The famous Tiruchendur temple was flooded due to torrential downpour of 30 cms. Trains have been canceled in many areas after the track was completely submerged in water.

There is no help even after 12 hours, even cars and people are forced to pass through the flooded roads.

Rani, a senior citizen, draped on a cot inside her submerged house, is worried. “We can’t even cook. There is no place to sleep. Water is everywhere. We are struggling. You should help us,” she told NDTV.

Health workers are involved in the Government Medical College and Hospital in the flood-affected wards. Nurses were seen completely underwater while draining water from the approach road of the hospital.

A man standing in knee-deep water said, “The relatives who come to meet their patients have to swim. However, no action has been taken so far.

Water at the rate of 20,000 cubic feet per second is being released into the perennial Thamirabarani river flowing through Thoothukudi district.

Five people have died in rain-related incidents across the state in the last 24 hours. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for five districts and forecast heavy rains for two more days in the northern part of the state. Schools are still closed in 22 districts. Around 10,000 people have been shifted to relief centers across the state.

Despite the heavy rains, the state government says they have managed to minimize the damage with early action.

Tamil Nadu’s Relief Commissioner Phanindra Reddy said, “Very few cracks have occurred in the water bodies. Large scale siltation work has been done in the rivers in the delta region. So the water is flowing fast there too. All these are our tremendous preparations.” and reflect the reaction.” Told NDTV.

The state has already received above normal rainfall. Reservoirs in the state are full. But the government says they are ready. Tamil Nadu has already demanded Rs 2,600 crore as central assistance and the deficit is mounting as the rains refuse to back down.
