New Delhi:

It is that time of year when politics is left behind in the northeastern hill state of Meghalaya. The leaders of every party come together in the Christmas spirit, set aside year-long differences and enjoy the festivities.

This year was no different. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma joined the state’s Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma, Speaker of the Assembly Metbah Lyngdoh and senior MLA Charles Pyngrop in singing Christmas carols and cheering for the festivities. Santa Claus is joined by the leaders as they lean toward Feliz Navidad.

A video of the open-air event – a pre-Christmas celebration with state ministers and legislators – showed the crowd dancing and clapping as state leaders sang.

“Glad to join the Hon’ble Speaker, Hon’ble Leader of the Opposition and Hon’ble MLA to sing Christmas Carol at the pre-Christmas celebrations, in which our colleagues also participated. Conrad Sangma wrote while sharing the video on Twitter.

Conrad Sangma recently stunned everyone with his performance of Bryan Adams’ all-time hit “Summer of 69” at an event in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. The video had accumulated a plethora of ‘likes’ and ‘retweets’ on Twitter.

Mr. Sangma is known to have a passion for music and is often seen playing his electric guitar. Last year, he uploaded a video in which he effortlessly played the Wasted Years of Iron Maiden. The caption read, “After a busy 3 day assembly session, relaxing with some Iron Maiden stuff. It’s been a long time I haven’t played so I guess there are some mistakes…”

There was a recent political coup in Meghalaya, in which former Chief Minister Mukul Sangma along with 11 MLAs exited the Congress and joined Mamata Banerjee’s Trinamool Congress. Within days, the Congress, in an unprecedented move, offered issue-based support to the state’s BJP-Conrad Sangma alliance. The Trinamool termed the Congress move as “a big betrayal of the opposition”.
