Watch: Monkey performs the Heimlich maneuver on a suffocating child; netizens stunned

Monkeys surprise us everyday, don’t they? After all, both humans and monkeys have the same ancestor. Several videos are going viral on social media in which monkeys are shown behaving like humans, leaving netizens in splits. Amidst such clips, we also see heart-warming moments and the latest clip that has hit the internet is just this one.

In the video going viral, a monkey is holding his child from behind and giving a loud jolt. Yes, you got it right. The monkey was pulling off a Heimlich maneuver, also known as an abdominal thrust, which is a first aid procedure used to help a suffocating person. It is used when a foreign object gets stuck in the upper airway.

Indian Forest Service officer Sushant Nanda has shared a clip that shows a primate trying to save his suffocating child by performing the Heimlich maneuver. The larger primate holds its infant close and begins to push, after which the food falls out of its baby’s mouth, which must have been stuck somewhere in its throat. “Abdominal thrust, also known as the Heimlich maneuver, is a first aid procedure used to treat upper airway obstructions by foreign objects. The monkey does this purely to protect its baby ,” the IAS officer wrote along with the video.

The 9-second video has been viewed more than 45,000 times and has garnered a lot of reactions from Twitter users. “Wow, this is an unexpected one,” tweeted one user, while another called the primate “intelligent.” A third dubbed the video “unbelievable”.

Performing the Heimlich maneuver is not as easy as the monkey saw. The assistant stands behind the patient and uses his or her hands to apply pressure to the bottom of the diaphragm. The purpose of the act is to compress the lungs and put pressure on the foreign object lodged in the trachea, which will eventually push it out of the system. While humans struggle to successfully pull off a Heimlich maneuver, the monkey caught it and was therefore able to save its child.
