Smith hit hard in the second session and showed enough resilience against the Indian bowlers to put on a solid 79-run partnership with Usman Khawaja to rebuild the Australian innings after some early setbacks.

India almost got the breakthrough when Umesh Yadav edged the ball outside off Travis Head, but wicketkeeper KS Bharath added to their poor start with the gloves when he dropped a sitter.

However, Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Head for 32 to pull India back. While Shami brought on Marnus Labuschagne on the verge of lunch to give the hosts a physical advantage.

Although, after lunch, it was the first wicketless session of the series, Khawaja read the conditions well, suited the batsmen and took advantage of the loose balls.
