Watch: Temple elephant throws mahout on the ground in Kerala, spectators in panic

Of all the states in India, Kerala has the largest population of wild elephants. There are more than 700 domesticated elephants in the state. Most of these mammals are owned by temples and individuals for religious ceremonies. Some tuskers also work in timber yards, while some residents keep them as their pets. Since the elephant is considered the state animal, it is also depicted on the emblem of the Government of Kerala.

While the participation of elephants in daily prayers and rituals is not new in Kerala, a recent jumbo has put devotees in jeopardy. During the evening rituals, Pachyderm became agitated and pushed a man sitting on top of him. The man narrowly escaped being trampled under the feet of the mighty beast. The video of the incident, which will almost shake your heart, has gone viral on social media and is being shared widely across all platforms.

The clip shows the animal vigorously shaking its body and head. The mahout sitting on top of it was seen forcing it to fall on the ground. The angry elephant then attacked the man and also tried to stamp him. However, the lucky mahout held himself up and managed to escape quickly but suffered minor injuries.

The horrific incident took place on September 24 at the Thiruvilavamala Vilavadrinath temple in Thrissur district of Kerala. Manorama News revealed that the jumbo went out of control during a nirmalyam ritual held in the evening. Reportedly, the tusker also kicked a Deepastambham (lamp) of the temple which left the onlookers in panic.
