BCCI President Sourav Ganguly said on Thursday that once… Virat Kohli Refused to stay on as India’s T20 captain, selectors make up their mind to hand over ODI reins Rohit Sharma Because the national team could not “lead much” in the limited overs format with two different captains.

The BCCI on Wednesday named Rohit the captain of the ODI team going into the 2023 ODI World Cup and Ganguly spoke on the issue in a conversation with PTI, saying the incumbent was spoken to and duly accepted the decision.

“We did not request Virat to step down as T20 captain, but he did not want to continue as captain. Therefore, the selectors felt that he did not have two white-ball captains in the two white-ball formats. Maybe. That’s too much leadership.” BCCI President and former India captain told PTI.

Kohli stepped down as T20 captain after India’s disastrous World Cup campaign in October-November.

Ganguly said the selectors felt that too many leaders would create confusion in the white-ball format and hence the Chetan Sharma-led committee suggested that it is better to have one leader.

“I don’t know (about the confusion) but that’s what they (the selectors) felt. That’s how it came to the conclusion – let Rohit be the captain in the white ball and let Virat be the captain in the red ball,” Ganguly said.

So how does he see Rohit performing as an ODI captain? Ganguly said he would not like to make any predictions but is confident about the new captain’s abilities.

“It is very difficult to predict. I wish him all the best and hope he does a good job,” he added.

But was it noticed that Kohli has been a good ODI captain, having a record of more than 70 per cent wins in 95 matches.

He said, “Yes, we did consider it, but if you look at Rohit’s record in all the ODIs he has captained for India, it is very good. Bottom line, not two white-ball captains could be.”

The sensitive question of Kohli not winning the ICC trophy during his tenure was also asked, but the board president declined to give details of the discussion.

“I can’t tell more about what was discussed at all and what the selectors said, but that is the primary reason for Rohit as the white-ball captain and Virat accepted it,” he revealed. .

On behalf of the BCCI, the President and the chairman of selectors spoke to Kohli and informed about the decision of the BCCI.

“Yes, I have personally spoken to Virat and chairman of selectors Chetan Sharma has also spoken to him on this issue,” he said.

Rohit was also replaced Ajinkya Rahane As Kohli’s deputy in the Test format, something that was on the expected lines due to Rahane’s poor form with the bat.
