We let Ole Gunnar Solskjaer down: Manchester United captain Harry Maguire

Manchester United captain Harry Maguire says players disappointed manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in their “embarrassing” 5-0 loss to Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday and need to take full responsibility and get together.

United toured Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday after a week of intense criticism and speculation over Solskjaer’s future at the club.

“I hope everyone in the dressing room is looking at themselves, taking full responsibility on their shoulders and not pointing fingers and blaming someone else,” Maguire told Sky Sports.

“When you have a result like this and a period like this you first look at yourself.

“We disappointed the manager against Liverpool. We let the fans down, the club, us as players. So we have to take a bigger responsibility for it.”

Maguire said it was difficult to process the defeat, which saw United go down 4-0 at halftime.

“It’s been tough, it’s been disappointing. When you look back at the results and performances it was embarrassing. Nowhere is good enough for this club,” he said.

“It’s been a tough week. I wouldn’t say we’ve moved on easily.

“It’s one of the lowest I’m sure all players have felt in their careers. You go home and you don’t get much sleep, thoughts running through your mind. ‘If only I had done this or this’ done’. If I can be honest, I went home and I just saw to myself what I could do better and take the whole responsibility on my shoulders.”

United’s leaked defense has been particularly under scrutiny after scoring nine goals in their last two Premier League games and keeping a clean sheet in their last 21 appearances in all competitions.

“We have conceded too many goals. I take a huge responsibility for that. I take responsibility for my performance, but also for my defensive performances,” said Maguire, 28.

“I am the captain, I have been a mainstay in defense for over two years. We have scored some good runs but at the moment we are not defending enough.

“I haven’t been very good and I want to get back to the form I showed before the injury in the last two seasons.”

The England defender said it was time for the club’s senior players to show their value.

“We have to stick together as a group now, try to move on from the (Liverpool) result and have a positive performance on Saturday,” Maguire said.

“We’ve got big players at this club, big experience, big international players and now we have to show that.”
