“Welcome Prime Minister, Salute to Farmers”: Former PM HD Deve Gowda on Agriculture Laws

HD Deve Gowda said he welcomed PM Narendra Modi’s decision to repeal three agriculture laws

Bangalore:

Former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda today welcomed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s decision to repeal three agriculture laws. The former prime minister tweeted, “I welcome PM Narendra Modi’s decision to repeal three agriculture laws. My salute to all farmers who have democratically protested against laws. Debate and discussion are important in a parliamentary system.”

In a major move, PM Modi today announced repeal of three central agriculture laws.

PM Modi said, “We have decided to repeal all three agriculture laws, will start the process in the Parliament session starting this month. I urge farmers to return home to their families and start afresh. “

Farmers have been protesting the Centre’s three agriculture laws since they were passed in 2020.

The first law is the Farmer’s Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, which provides for setting up a mechanism to allow farmers to sell their agricultural products outside Agricultural Produce Market Committees (APMCs). Any licensed trader can buy produce from farmers at mutually agreed prices. This trade of agricultural products will be free from mandi tax imposed by the state governments.

The Agreement on Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Price Assurance and Agricultural Services Act allows farmers to take up contract farming and market their produce freely.

The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act is an amendment to the existing Essential Commodities Act.
