The budget session of the West Bengal Legislative Assembly will begin on February 8. A resolution against the bifurcation of the state will be taken up for discussion along with other issues in the session. The assembly session will begin with Governor CV Anand Bose’s address to the House. This will be the Governor’s first address to the state assembly after assuming office.

No representative of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) attended the Business Advisory Committee held in the state assembly on Tuesday. Assembly Speaker Biman Banerjee hoped that the opposition members would listen to the Governor’s address and allow the House to function. Mr. Banerjee said that in the past the members of the opposition used to listen to the Governor’s address without any ruckus. The Speaker said that while participating in the discussion, the opposition members can always put forth their views.

Budget likely on February 15

The West Bengal government’s budget for the financial year 2023-24 is likely to be presented in the House on February 15. During the upcoming assembly session, a motion is likely to be moved from the treasury benches against any bifurcation of the state. West Bengal. The Speaker said that if such a proposal is brought, it will get priority. “It is an important matter. In various news media reports, we see people raising the issue of partition of Bengal. If there is such a resolution in the West Bengal Assembly, we must take it up for discussion.”

Leaders of North Bengal, especially BJP MLAs, have raised the issue of bifurcation of West Bengal several times. The state BJP leadership had tried to dismiss these comments as personal remarks. BJP’s chief whip in the state assembly Manoj Tigga on Tuesday said that the state BJP does not support the bifurcation of the state. Mr Tigga said the Trinamool had agreed to some kind of bifurcation of the state in 2011 by agreeing to the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) in the Darjeeling hills.

The BJP MLA said that the party had decided not to participate in the business advisory committee meeting on the ground that the party was denied the post of the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee. The post of PAC chairman had gone to Mukul Roy and following the resignation of Krishna Kalyani – both BJP MLAs who had joined the Trinamool Congress after the 2021 assembly polls. The Speaker said that the decisions of the House were taken as per the laid down procedures and the Constitution and that he was not aware that Krishna Kalyani was no longer a BJP MLA.
