Bengal BJP holds a meeting to discuss keeping party’s flock together and address grievances

A day after Barrackpore MP Arjun Singh broke ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and returned to the Trinamool Congress (TMC), another party MP Soumitra Khan on Monday embarrassed the party by demanding a separate state from the West. . Jangalmahal area of Bengal.

The forest area of Purulia, Bankura, Paschim Medinipur and Jhargram, located in the south-western part of the state, is known as the Jangalmahal area, and the Bishnupur MP has raised the issue at a time when the BJP is battling defection. Election setback in West Bengal

The bifurcation of the state is an emotional issue and the Darjeeling hills have seen violence for decades demanding the creation of a separate Gorkhaland state. While the demand for a separate state in North Bengal is raised at regular intervals, the creation of a separate state from South Bengal has not been discussed much. The BJP MP’s remarks were criticized by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) leadership. A section of observers feels that Mr Khan’s statement is a deliberate attempt to attract media attention and become the subject of discussion.

Meanwhile, West Bengal BJP leaders held a meeting during the day to discuss how to keep the party’s flock together and address grievances. Among the leaders present in the meeting were BJP state president Sukant Majumdar, Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly Suvendu Adhikari and party’s co-in-charge Amit Malviya. The party also discussed the challenge of ensuring appointments in Barrackpore, where Mr Singh’s defection has resulted in nil. There is also speculation that Arjun Singh’s son and BJP MLA from Bhatpara Pawan Kumar Singh will also join TMC in the coming days. “It is quite natural that Pawan Singh will leave the party as his father has jumped off the ship. The grassroots fighters in the state are still with us to take it from a party of just three MLAs to 77 MLAs. Some opportunistic leaders are leaving us,” said BJP national vice president Dilip Ghosh.

Leaders such as BJP national secretary Anupam Hazra said it was “laughable” if the party put up a brave face and said Mr. Arjun Singh’s defection will not affect the party’s prospects in the state. “With this casual approach we are not going to get anything. We have to stop saying that all is well in the party,” Mr. Hazra said.

The defection of Shri Arjun Singh is one of the series of defection for the BJP. The list includes Mukul Roy, Babul Supriyo, Rajiv Banerjee and Sabyasachi Dutta as well as half a dozen MLAs who won the assembly elections on BJP tickets.
