The deceased have been identified as Chinmoy Dey (36), Gautam Dey (40), Sheikh Halim (41), Sheikh Surbati (34) and Bhabani Prasad Sai.
Police, however, confirmed four deaths – two on Thursday and two on Friday.
Superintendent of Police Kamnasish Sen said that while two persons were in an inebriated condition, the families of the other two denied that they had consumed alcohol.
“After the post-mortem, we will know the exact cause of the deaths. We have closed all the liquor shops in the city,” he said.
He said that all 134 private and government hospitals in the district have been asked to report whether patients with similar symptoms are admitted.
Locals claimed that five people died after consuming “poisonous” liquor sold illegally in various eateries.
The deaths also triggered a war of words with the BJP alleging that the administration was trying to suppress the incident.
Trinamool Congress hit back saying that the administration is taking all necessary steps but BJP is doing politics over deaths.
