New Delhi: The Center on Tuesday said the governments of West Bengal and Punjab have expressed their apprehension over the notification expanding the jurisdiction of the Border Security Force (BSF) in some states and termed them as “wrong”.

Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai also said that the expansion of BSF’s territorial jurisdiction will lead to better and more effective control of cross-border crimes in collaboration with the state police.

He said that the central government has amended the notifications of 2014 and through a notification dated October 11, 2021, expanded the jurisdiction of BSF to some states.

Section 139(1) (i) of the BSF Act, 1968 empowers the Central Government to confer powers and duties on members of the Force in respect of any Central Act for the purposes specified therein.

“The Government of West Bengal and the Government of Punjab have expressed apprehension that such a move leads to encroachment of the powers of the State Government. Their apprehensions are baseless,” Rai said in reply to a written query.
