Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, Aston Villa captain Tyrone Mings and Arsenal youngster Emil Smith Rowe were absent from the 27-man selection.

Kyle Walker, Kieran Trippier, Calvin Phillips and Fikayo Tomori, fresh from winning Serie A with AC Milan, were included in the Nations League squad, but with no recall for Leicester playmaker James Maddison.

Bowen and Justin were exceptional inclusions in Southgate’s squad for Four Nations League games, traveling to Hungary and Germany with Molyneux facing off against Italy and Hungary again.

In March after a leg injury potentially prevented him from receiving his first senior call-up, West Ham star Bowen was involved, who finished a fine season with 18 goals and 13 assists in all competitions.

The versatile full-back Justin was a more surprising inclusion. The 24-year-old has made 19 appearances in all competitions since recovering from an anterior cruciate injury in February 2021.

On Bowen’s inclusion, Southgate said on Tuesday: “Consistently strong performance. We were definitely thinking of including him in March before he got injured.

“He’s a threat to a goal and his straight journey is an interesting reminder that you don’t need to be at a specific academy – experience is a good way to go.

“He works incredibly hard for the team, which is what we want all of our players to do. He totally deserves his call-up.”

Justin has impressed Southgate since recovering from a knee injury.

“He is a player that we have followed for a long time and he has obviously suffered a very serious injury and now we think he has played many matches and is able to play more regularly,” Southgate said.

“He is comfortable playing left or right-back and is very comfortable with the ball, is a super athlete and a very good person.”

AC Milan defender Fikayo Tomori and Roma striker Tammy Abraham have been rewarded for impressive seasons in Italy after leaving Chelsea over the past 12 months.

Tomori played a key role in AC Milan’s first Serie A title for 11 years, while Abraham helped Roma reach the Europa Conference League final against Feyenoord on Wednesday.

Southgate also revealed that he left Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson due to appear in this weekend’s Champions League final against Real Madrid.

Henderson’s Anfield teammate Trent Alexander-Arnold is in the squad but is expected to be given time at the end of the international period.

England travel to Budapest to face Hungary on 4 June, before taking on Germany in Munich three days later.

Southgate’s team then hosted Italy on 11 June and a repeat of last year’s Euro 2020 final before playing Hungary on 14 June.
