What is Wordle?
It is a once in a day word game that went viral earlier this year. It can be run on only one website.
Who brought this upon us?
Wordley was created by Josh Wardle, a software engineer from New York. He built a prototype in 2013 and dusted it off during the pandemic for his partner, who likes to play word games.

Wordle is simple: You have six chances to guess the secret five-letter word of the day. Type a word as a guess, and the game tells you which letters are or aren’t in the word.
The objective is to find out the secret word with the least amount of guesses.
What Changes Has the New York Times Made to Wordle?
A spokesperson for the media company said it was updating the word list and removing vague words like “agora” as possible answers.
Were people getting two different answers on the same day?
Yes, there were two answers on March 30th for Wordle game number 284. Reason: A New York Times spokesperson said the word “Harry” was dropped for being vague and replaced with “stove”, but some players still saw “Harry”.
This is the second time the New York Times has bought Wordle. For game number 241 on 15 February, some players saw the word “Agora” removed instead of “Aroma”.
What do the green and yellow squares mean?
When you guess in the game, the letter tiles change color to show how close you are to the secret word.
If you guess “tired” and “w” turns green, that means the secret word begins with “w.” Any letter that is not in the secret word is grayed out.
Can the letters of a secret word be used twice?
Yes. Knoll and Abhay were the recent answers. The game won’t tell you that the letter you guessed is twice in the secret word, unless you guess the word that contains two letters.
Is there an app?
No. It can only be played on the game’s website.
But that hasn’t stopped others from creating their own copycat games to capitalize on the trend. The Bogus Wordle app has been acquired by Apple Inc. App Store, reaching the top of the most downloaded charts. Apple said it removed those apps.
Can I play more than once per day?
Some players have figured out a way to do this: They use the Wayback Machine, an online Internet archive where you can visit Wordle’s website and play old games from days past.
It’s a breeze. Is there a hard way to play?
There is a way to switch to “Hard Mode”. This means when a letter turns green or yellow, you must use those letters in the following guesses.
Whether it’s hard or not depends on how you play already. Some keep guessing the words with the correct letters in advance. Others, when they cannot come up with a word with the correct letters, guess with the word that consists of the different letters.
To switch to hard mode, click the gear icon in the top right corner of the game and click to turn on hard mode.
I want to be a Wordle Wiz. Any tips, tricks or five letter words?
There is a lot of debate going on among the fans about the best way to play. Mr Wardle himself said he did not know the best strategy. “You’re asking the wrong person,” he said. “I’m so bad at it.”
Avid players usually have a favorite first word they think gets the fastest answer. Two groups have emerged: those that type in vowel-heavy words first, such as “adieu” or “get up”, and those that go after common consonants with words such as “tack”.
Some have even created spreadsheets for locating the most frequent letters in five-letter words. One player determined they were E, S, A, R and O and chose to use “Arrows” as their first guess.
Others just wing it and type whatever comes to their mind. If you’re looking for strategies, try searching for Wordle Facebook groups like Wordle Friends, where people are sharing tips, tricks, and hints.
Another trick in the first two guesses is to use words with completely different letters. The idea is to eliminate as many letters as possible quickly. For example, using “soar” as the first approximation and then “linty” as the second.
If you want to spend more time researching strategies, the Internet is full of them. On YouTube, a user shows you how to solve Wordle using scientific theory. WordPlay.com grades how well your first word is, and will spit out other words to try.
How do I share my results?
After you finish a game, tap or click the “Share” button that pops up. You can then go to Twitter, Facebook or the messaging app and paste in your results to share.
Why are my Facebook and Twitter timelines a sea of green and yellow squares?
First of all, sorry about that. This is part of why the game has gone viral. Creators noticed that New Zealand fans were posting the results with colored boxes they made themselves. So they made it easy to share game results.
What do the numbers mean when people post their results on social media?
When people post their results, numbers appear above the green and yellow squares that look like this: 208 4/6. The first number means that the person played game number 208. Every day, a new game gets a new number. And “4/6” indicates the person who guessed four times before correctly guessing the word of the day. The “6” represents the players’ six guesses. An X/6 means the player lost.
How did Wordle go viral?
Mr Wardle said the game debuted in mid-November, when technologist Andy Bao put a link to the game in his blog. Mr Wardle then made it easy to share the results by posting green and yellow squares to Facebook, Twitter and texting apps, and the game went viral from there.
“The Tonight Show” Host Jimmy Fallon has repeatedly tweeted about the game, which has helped fuel its popularity.
What should I do after playing Wordle?
Wordley’s passion is inspiring people to rediscover the decades-old games they played as kids. Some are searching their homes for forgotten board games such as Mastermind, or to download apps based on them, such as Joto.
Is a word game show coming to TV?
Yes. CBS is reviving the game show “Lingo,” where two teams have to guess words after being given the first letter.
CBS did not mention Wordley in its February announcement, but did indicate the country’s recent obsession with word games.
“Everyone is looking for a five letter word, we have one…” Lingo, CBS said in a tweet.
The show will air sometime in 2022 and will be hosted by RuPaul Charles, host of the competition drag show “RuPaul’s Drag Race”.
Wordle made it on “Saturday Night Live”?
Yes. It was featured in a sketch on the January 22 episode, featuring James Austin Johnson, who impersonates former President Donald Trump. Trump booster shots of Mr Johnson, actor Jason Momoa and other unrelated things go to a long-winded speech, filling the wordley game with words. In the end, Wordley’s answer was “Trump.”
How many people are playing?
When The New York Times bought Wordle, it said that millions of people play it, but did not give exact numbers. According to Mr Wardle, this is a huge increase from November 1, 2021, when 90 people played the game. He said that on January 7, around 18 lakh people played it.
Why only once a day?
The once daily aspect also helped the game go viral. Since everyone in the world gets the same wordplay game at midnight in their time zone, it enables players to talk to each other about how they did and what they guessed.
“It becomes a shared experience,” said Mr Wardle.
Why is Buffalo Wild Wings tweeting about Wordle?
Brands can’t resist jumping on the viral trend. It is a way to engage in conversation and gain followers and likes. The Chicken-Wing series turned the game into a series of five-letter words: orders. Wing. Today.
Lego re-imagined Wordle with its colored bricks. IKEA spotted the game in one of its shelving units.
London-based Starling Bank Ltd used Wordley’s sections to tease its rivals on Twitter and declared itself the best British bank.
Are famous people playing it?
Yes. Composer Questlove tweeted that he was “legitimately inclined” after solving his first Wordle puzzle. Mr. Fallon of “The Tonight Show” tweeted to his 51 million followers in early January that he was “addicted” to the game. Three days later the comedian tweeted that he was “still hooked.”
I am colorblind. Is there any way to play?
There is a “colorblind mode” that changes the correct guesses from green and yellow to orange and blue, colors that are easier for people with color blindness to distinguish. Click on the gear icon in the top right corner of the game and click on Colorblind mode to change it.
Anything else I should know?
Yes. Several wordal spoofs and variations have emerged. For geography enthusiasts, there is Worldal, where you are shown an outline of a country and have to guess the locale. If you can’t navigate New York City’s subway system without a map, try Subway, which asks you to locate the best subway lines to get to the destination.
You can try to guess the letter of the day on Laterale. Or swear words for naughty words if that’s your thing. When you guess the right four-letter word, the site tells you, “I’m sure your mom would be very proud.”
