When is Pitru Paksha 2022? Start and End Dates, Timings, Rituals and Significance

Pitru Paksha 2022: The Shradh period ends on Mahalaya Day, which is falling on 25 September this year.

Pitru Paksha or Shradh is a 15-day period that begins during the full moon day of Shukla Paksha in the month of Bhadrapada according to the Hindu calendar. It ends on the new moon day of Krishna Paksha. During this period, Hindus pay homage to the departed souls of their ancestors. Pitru Paksha is marked by the rituals of Shradh and a restricted lifestyle. It is believed that the rituals of Shradh during this period help the ancestors to attain Moksha or salvation.

Pitru Paksha 2022: Important Dates

This year Pitru Paksha is starting from Saturday 10th September and will end on Sunday 25th September.

Time:

The timings of Kutup Muhurta, Rohina Muhurta and Aparna Kaal on 10th September are as follows:

  • Kutup Muhurta: 11:53 am to 12:43 pm
  • Rohina Muhurta: 12:43 pm to 1:33 pm
  • Aparna Kaal: 1:33 PM to 4:03 PM

Shraadh Rituals

  1. According to Hindu traditions, the ritual of Shradh or Pind Daan for ancestors can be performed on any day during this 15-day period.
  2. The Shradh period ends on Mahalaya Day, which falls on September 25 this year.
  3. On the day of Shradh, the eldest member of the family takes a bath and wears new clothes with a ring made of Kush grass.
  4. Kush grass is considered a representation of kindness and is also used to summon ancestors.
  5. Post this, a wooden table is covered with white cloth and kept facing south.
  6. The table is then covered with black sesame seeds and barley seeds, on top of which the portrait of the ancestors is placed.
  7. After this, the ancestors are called and the body is offered in the form of balls of rice or wheat, which is made from honey, rice or wheat, goat’s milk, sugar and ghee.
  8. After this, offering water, flour, barley, kush and black sesame mixed with tarpan is offered.
  9. After the rituals of Shradh and Tarpan, food is given to the poor people.

Importance

According to Hinduism, it is believed that the souls of ancestors reside in Pitruloka and they descend to earth during Pitrupaksha. Hence, every year during this time, the family members of the deceased perform Shradh to pay homage to the ancestors. The rituals performed during Pitru Paksha help the departed souls to attain Moksha or Moksha.
