Tokyo:

A Japanese school has been hit with a $27,000 water bill after the teacher in charge of pool maintenance left the tap on for months in hopes of preventing coronavirus infections.

The teacher, who has not been identified, thought the constant flow of fresh water into the pool would keep it Covid-free and left the tap on from late June to early September.

Normally, chlorine and filtering machines maintain the quality of pool water, Akira Kojiri, a local board of education official, told AFP, “but the teacher somehow got the wrong idea that adding new water would do the trick, too.” Even that will help in preventing Covid.”

Other staff members occasionally noticed the on tap and turned it off, but the abusive colleague soon turned it back on.

As a result, Kojiri said, an estimated 4,000 tons of additional water were used in just two months — enough to fill the pool 11 times more.

Local officials in Yokosuka in central Japan’s Kanagawa Prefecture are now demanding teachers and two supervisors pay half of the 3.5 million yen ($27,000) bill.

“We deeply apologize to our residents for causing (financial) damage to our city,” Yokosuka officials said in a statement.
