Why did this NGO want to ban BGMI in India?

Prahaar President Abhay Mishra said, “Since February this year, we have raised the fact that BGMI and Banned PUBG are one and the same. In the so-called new avatar, BGMI was no different from the predecessor PUBG, Tencent still controls it in the background. We are grateful to the Government of India for taking this step in the interest of India’s security and sovereignty.

While the NGO continues to call BGMI a Chinese, South Korea-based Crafton which is operating BGMI in India, said during the game’s launch that they did not have any Chinese partners or specifically Tencent’s. There is no “link”.

The government source claimed that the reason for banning BGMI in India is due to “security and data sharing concerns”.

Meanwhile, an NGO named Prahar has been active in raising concerns to the government over allowing BGMI sports in India for quite some time.

In February 2022, Prahar wrote to the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) and the Ministry of Electronics and Information technology (MeitY) to block Chinese app BGMI under Section 69A of Information technology Act, “because it threatens the sovereignty and integrity of India, the defense of India, the security of the State and public order.”

Mishra said, “RSS affiliate Swadeshi Jagran Manch (SJM) had also supported the attack on this issue and said that the government should thoroughly investigate the antecedents of the BGMI-PubG app and the influence of China and find violations.” Action should be taken immediately upon leaving.”

“In March 2022, we also wrote an open letter to Chinese billionaire Pony Ma, the founder of Tencent Holdings, seeking answers to 10-point questions on antecedents and secret ties between Crafton, the current face of the company BGMI. India and Tencent are the former banned owners of PUBG. The radio from Pony Ma was silent,” said Mishra.

Recently, the Union Minister of State for Electronics and Information Technology, Rajiv Chandrashekhar pointed to media reports which claimed that a child killed his mother “under the influence of PUBG”. While PUBG Mobile is already banned in India, he highlighted in Rajya Sabha that banned apps appearing in new names are a matter of concern. He also said that such games have been sent to the home ministry for “examination”.

PUBG Mobile was banned by the Government of India on September 2, 2020. Within ten months, Crafton relaunched the game as Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI). BGMI is the largest of the Chinese apps that relaunched and rebranded with similar features and managed to circumvent scrutiny.
