History of National Cartoonists Day? Why is May 5th considered as National Cartoonists Day?

The Sunday Morning Paper in New York held a small surprise for its readers. On May 5, 1895, the New York World produced a single-stripe, full-color portrait of a little boy with big ears, barefoot and a mischievous grin. The comic strip, created by American comic strip writer and artist Richard Outkault, was called ‘Hogan’s Alley’ and was later renamed ‘The Yellow Kid’.

It became the first commercially successful cartoon to appear on postcards, billboards, cigarette packs and other advertisements.

The Yellow Kid series ended in 1898, and—by that time—the cartoon was a feature of a popular newspaper. So with time the demand for talented cartoonists and illustrators also increased.

When was the National Cartoonist Society formed?

A group of cartoonists, namely Gus Edson, Otto Soglo, Clarence D. Russell, Bob Dunn, and others, organized small cartoon shows in hospitals during World War II to entertain soldiers during World War II. Noticing the positive response, the group expanded and demonstrated in hospitals and various military bases.

While watching the show at one of the military bases, Clarence D. Russell suggested the group form a club, so that it could continue after World War II had ended. Thus the National Cartoonists Society (NCS) was born in 1946.

People try to find deeper meaning in my work. I want to say, ‘They’re just cartoons, guys. You laugh or not.’ Gee, I look shallow. But I do not react to current events or other stimuli. I don’t read or watch TV to get ideas. My job is basically to sit at the drawing table and fool around: gary larson

As a cartoonist, I am a caricaturist. First, you find out what a person really looks like, and then you find out what he really looks like: frank miller

Cartooning is promoting. And I think we have a right to do some publicity. I hate shallow humor. I hate shallow religious humour, I hate shallow sports humour, I hate any trope: Charles M. Schulzo
