According to a report in The New York Times, nearly 60% of over 200 employees of outsourced firm Cognizant have signed a petition refusing to comply with the requirement to be in office on all five working days . These workers are employed in Bothel, a city in the US state of Washington.
As per the mandate, these contract workers are required to work from office for all five days a week from June 6. Since these employees work for Cognizant, not Google Simply put, they are not eligible for the tech giant’s three-day work week policy and have petitioned for equal flexibility.
“Gas is currently about $5 per gallon, and many of us in the office are not able to live close to the office due to our low wages and the high cost of housing in Bothel,” he wrote in a petition. This month (May) gas prices in the US have reached a record high.
get support from Alphabet labor union
The petition of these Google Maps workers has received support from the Alphabet Workers Union (AWU), a union representing employees of Google’s parent company Alphabet. AWU supported the demand of these contract workers in a series of tweets. “We are supporting our members as they petition for an RTO policy that is flexible, prioritizes worker safety and protects the quality of Google Maps – a product these workers love,” One tweet says.
