Why timely detection of suicidal tendencies is important to save lives

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), more than 700,000 people die by suicide every year, which means one person every 40 seconds. The health body said suicide is a global phenomenon. The reasons for suicide vary from person to person. However, timely intervention by relatives and friends can save a person from developing suicidal thoughts.

According to the WHO, 77 percent of suicides occurred in low- and middle-income countries in 2019. It said suicides accounted for 1.3% of all deaths worldwide in 2019.

World Suicide Prevention Day is celebrated every year on 10 September to raise awareness among people to prevent suicidal tendencies.

Dr Aruna Bruta, a former Delhi University (DU) professor and clinical psychologist, said the act of suicide is so “unexpected and sudden” that it is difficult to identify the signs in advance.

“Now, some scientific techniques are coming to the fore to study a person’s behavior and detect suicidal tendencies in a person. However, suicidal tendencies can only be identified by experts. There is little chance of that. It is important that common people can recognize these signs. If detected at an early stage, a person can be treated, and hence a suicide attempt can be prevented,” she said.

However, Dr Bruta said that there are some scientific reasons for suicidal tendencies that cannot be ignored.

“Suicide can also be genetic. A person may also have suicidal tendencies if he or she belongs to a family in which one has died by suicide. Several types of biochemical disorders can also lead to suicidal ideation in a person. can,” she said.

“Mood and schizoid personality disorder can be a major cause of suicide in people from affluent families,” she said.

Psychologist Bruta said that if a person shows a negative mindset in everything and behaves abnormally, his family should support and motivate him to think positive. If the person continues to behave abnormally for several days, families should consult a psychiatrist, she said.
