Why you should not consume buttermilk with salt

Symptoms of lactose intolerance include upset stomach, diarrhea and gas.

Buttermilk can have some negative effects due to its high salt content and the potential for allergies in some people.

Buttermilk provides various nutrients like protein, calcium and riboflavin in a single dose. It has the potential to provide a variety of health benefits, such as boosting bone and oral health as well as lowering blood pressure. It is rich in calcium and phosphorus, and if fortified, can also be a source of vitamin D. Additionally, full-fat types of buttermilk contain significant amounts of vitamin K2. However, buttermilk may have some negative effects due to high salt levels and the potential to cause an allergic reaction in some people. Excessive sodium intake is associated with a higher likelihood of developing high blood pressure, especially in people who are salt-sensitive. High blood pressure is considered a contributing factor to heart disease.

Dr. Jitendra Sharma told News18 that most people prefer to drink buttermilk after a full meal, which helps in digestion and cures problems like lethargy, fatigue, heaviness in the stomach and flatulence. However, it should be noted that according to him adding salt to enhance the taste can have an adverse effect on the stomach.

Know why salt should not be added to buttermilk

Dr. Sharma advises against adding salt to buttermilk, as it can have a harmful effect on the stomach. An excess of salt can negatively affect the good bacteria in the gut. However, plain buttermilk has many benefits, as it is rich in probiotics and promotes gut health. Like curd, buttermilk and lassi made from curd have properties that are beneficial for good bacteria. Adding salt to buttermilk reduces the activity and effectiveness of probiotics, which can result in the death of good bacteria in the gut.

Know which people should not consume buttermilk at all

People who are allergic to milk should avoid consuming buttermilk as it can cause various symptoms like stomach upset, vomiting, wheezing, hives and in severe cases anaphylaxis, according to Healthline.

Buttermilk contains lactose, a naturally occurring sugar to which many people are intolerant. Even though some individuals with lactose intolerance may find buttermilk easier to digest, many may be sensitive to its lactose content. Symptoms of lactose intolerance include upset stomach, diarrhea and gas.
